ESRA TURAN TOMBAK

        One of our guest lecture was the architect Esra Turan Tombak who work at the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, at General Directorate of Construction Affairs, deals with the public building. She talked about the construction process and phases of public buildings and energy efficiency of building. So the ministry deals with the environment, planning, building scales, zoning plans and issues, laws, regulation, standarts about them, prepares contracts and technical specifications. She mentioned the technical units within public institutions. She showed the projects that have been done by the ministry. She talked about the requirements of investment process of public buildings. She elaborated on preliminary design phase, design phase and construction phase. They calculate the cost and acquire static mechanic and all plans. Property belongs to Finance ministry and they do preliminary studies about zoning status and master plan. To be able to do correct design responding to environment, surrounding, there need determined limits and specifications from the ministry such as height, in a competition you would be eliminated. You need to have boundary survey to proceed in a project, infrastructure data of the land is also important which affects your design or applications to the municipality. Then, there comes building programme phase. She talked about classifications of the building that alterations occur in unit prices. Furthermore, she said consultants have different coefficients of the design from the cost of building and mentioned about approximate unit costs. Then she talked about every material of building should be determined by the architect to prevent changes and interventions from contractor to steal from material or any act to profit, bill of quantity is on the architect. She showed the ministries letterhead and drawings and finishing schedule list, unit price code and its explanations.

AYŞİN SEVGİ KARAKURT MACİT 

          Aysin Sevgi Karakurt Macit mentioned her career and how she proceed from the beginning to her present achievements. The network that you produce from the very beginning academic life to the every connection, work and relation that you made is very important. She explained the importance of the self development in career path and determination. After her graduation she go with her career path 3 of her friends from the architectural department, then they separated. Her office includes many disciplines and she tells that the communication with the stakeholders is the key for this architectural career.

DUYGU ÇÖPLÜ

        Duygu Çöplü graduated from Bilkent University Architecture department and Preparatory German Language student in Ruhr Universty Bochum and she mentioned her success story of her such as low tuition fees in Germany and scholarship options during th intership and Erasmus.

ÖYKÜ SU ÖKKAN

        Öykü Su Ökkan, a masters of architecture student in Techniche Universiteit Delft Student. She gave the information about master studies. She explained how they design buildable projects that have technical details and they get the right to work in 2 year of diploma in Netherland.

IRMAK ÅžENER 

        Irmak Sener, a masters of architecture student in Pratt Institute Student. She shared her experience of the application requirements and how she applied and her expectations. She mnetioned the  education in Pratt Institue and the conceptual design, interships and work opportunities.

ENİS ÖNCÜOÄžLU 

         Enis Öncüoglu mentioned the intrcourse of politics and archtecture in Turkey wthin the multiple worl load of architecture. He eleborated on politics effect on architecture, the relation with foreign countiries can be efected by the results of politic aspects and the work as well. Additionally, he emphasized on the complex diciplinary through architecture and combination and management of all. Business management, business development, legal knowledge, politics, material expertise, human communication and technology was the discussion. He also mentioned that it is important to have a mentor of experienced architect before the graduation.

TUBA YÜCEL & ELİF BARAN 

         In the lecture, there was the case of steps of design and construction. They explained the Prokon group that is a multidisciplinary engineering-dominant company. There is eloborated two options for architect whether being on a architectural office or the construction site. Furthermore, they classified the phases of a project as the design phase, tender phase, construction phase and such. They emhisized the multidisiplanary aspect of the architecture and they explained theirselves and career paths.

YİĞİT ACAR

         In the lecture Yigit Acar shared the information of the graduated people first year roadmap of in architectural career. The analysis of Yigit Acar is from the study of 2 years ago. He showed the data of the professional practice that some graduates working outside of the architectural field and some more of them working on architectural office, some of them working at an architectural related NGO’s and some are not in employment or education. So the graduates seems to have intension having off year, doing nothing and they were concerned about that, however they also spending time setting up career.

         He focused on non-architecture related, non-professional or non academic work environment since the course covers the other subjects. In the software development field, he explained 2 graduates from Bilkent University and 2 from the Middle East Technical University  have their company as producing games a niche of potential. He mentioned the Iva-box company that is people are working for almost real rendering of the architectural offices project products and one of his student had the office practice in there and now she is working full-time in there. Then he mentioned the graduated students interest to İstanbul Mimarlık ve Åžehircilik AraÅŸtırmaları Academisi is the other alternative for the graduated looking for their own career path with related to their talent and interests. In addition he mentioned the NGO’S choosen by the new architects such as Kültürel Mirası Koruma Dernegi. He emphasized the internship experience and effect on the job opportunity to begin with, since it is a place that the student proven the abilities and trial.

          Later, Yigit Acar mentioned the master studies of Bilkent graduates in different disciplines of architecture in different Universities both at Turkey and abroad. People choose to have their masters in Pratt and Milano, İstanbul Technical University, Bilkent, METU, Architecture Association and such and positive feedback of these schools from the graduates. Then, he mention the Bilkent Universities programme of the graduate studies in architecture, he elaborated on Department of Architecture and Master of Science In Architecture and Areas of Specializations and degree requirements and they are selecting them by interviews. He made suggestions for masters. He made us think about why do we need or do we really need the master degree in architecture. He gives the hint about admission process, the programme and the people that we need to deal and have network and the time, financial recourses, tuitions, scholarships. It is important to be aware of your master to make a proper career move. Establishing a research and such topics on academia, there are other programmes that can be beneficial for career path such as computer games, business administration and other fields of design. Local regulations are important to consider where to work later on. Architectural discipline is a community business, for the master schools that one choose can be very beneficial for the network and develop relation and communication with people is the essential investment. He strongly suggested be aware about the spaces and their network of the programme. He explained that some programmes take longer and some have quality of a less time.
